Why Do Scientists Change Their Minds?

Skincare

How agility of thinking is key to our formulation process

It can be a humbling experience to acknowledge that what you once believed was incorrect; to admit your stance on a matter has shifted due to new information. To admit that once upon a time, you didn't know any better! But science, by its very nature, is a self-correcting discipline. As research advances and better tools emerge, our understanding deepens, and yes, sometimes shifts, even radically so.

When we’ve updated our position on certain ingredients or broader concepts like sun protection, red light therapy and ingestible collagen peptide supplements, we’ve received questions from our community: Why did you change your mind? The answer is simple: because that's what good scientists do.

In the context of skincare, the science is always evolving. This isn’t a sign of confusion - instead, it reflects a commitment to evidence-based, rigorous research. At Synergie Skin, we embrace the change because it means we will continue to deliver products that align with the latest and most reliable findings.

Why do scientists change their opinions?

When scientists revise their views, they’re demonstrating our ongoing openness to new evidence. A hypothesis might hold up for years until new data emerges to challenge or refine it. This is how self-correcting science works.

For example, ingredients that were once praised for their benefits may later reveal drawbacks or even unfavourable side effects after long-term studies. Conversely, overlooked compounds can become star performers when studied and applied in new ways.

When it comes to science-led skincare, adaptability ensures that every ingredient is more than a trend, it’s evidence-backed. This process reinforces transparency and trust, because when we announce skincare formulation updates, we do so to reflect stronger scientific consensus not to chase market noise.

How do we know when science evolves?

Scientific evolution simply means we know more than we did yesterday. In skincare, that might mean discovering better delivery systems for active ingredients, or uncovering the role of the microbiome in supporting barrier integrity.

At Synergie Skin, we actively update our formulations to reflect the latest peer-reviewed research. This does not necessarily mean the original product was bad. It means we now have an opportunity to make it better. This philosophy aligns with our Clean Science approach: choosing ingredients that are both evidence-based and ethically sound.

How do we harness self-correcting science to improve skincare?

Self-correcting science improves skincare by helping us move from theory to results. Whether it is the way we stabilise vitamin C, or how we pair ingredients to increase absorption, evidence-based skincare is designed to perform under real-world conditions.

Clinical trials, dermatological research, and formulation technology all play a role. Our founder and cosmetic chemist, Terri Vinson Jones, has always said that formulating is about balance: efficacy without irritation, elegance without compromise.

The science behind skincare improves the way we care for skin at every level: the outer barrier and the functional living cells beneath.

Should we trust products that change formulas?

Yes! In most cases, companies that are willing to revise their formulas are doing so because they wish to improve their product in light of revised science and new industry developments. That said, we encourage you to ask questions.

When Synergie Skin reformulates a product, we do it with purpose. Whether it is to include an ingredient supported by stronger evidence, remove one that no longer aligns with our standards, or to enhance overall efficacy, these changes are rooted in scientific innovation in beauty.

Our responsibility is to give your skin the most current and effective care possible with total integrity. So, if you are ever curious about why a product has changed, we are here to explain it. Because scientific transparency is our obligation to you.

Is changing your mind a sign of better science?

In truth, it is one of the most powerful signs. A good scientist does not cling to outdated beliefs. Ideally, they should continuously examine new findings, ask clarifying questions, and share their insights with the wider community.

At Synergie Skin, this mindset underpins everything we do. From our ingredient choices and clinical testing to our research partnerships. It all reflects our belief that evolving knowledge benefits everyone.

Skincare isn't a static industry. As our understanding grows, so too does the potential for meaningful, visible change in your skin health.

Staying informed together

Our goal has always been to inform rather than dictate. We want to support your skincare journey by giving you the tools to make educated choices, whether that means learning why we use certain actives, or understanding why a product might be updated after years on the market.
